itinerary:
Your day trip begins after breakfast when we collect you from your hotel or riad in Fes at 10 AM. If you need a different pickup time, we can accommodate your schedule—just let us know what works best for you!
First, we’ll drive to the holy village of Moulay Idriss, perched on the edge of Mount Zerhon, offering dramatic views of the beautiful Moroccan countryside, including Volubilis.
This village is a pilgrimage site for Muslims, as it is believed that those who cannot afford to go on Hajj can visit Moulay Idriss five times during their lifetime for equal status.
The village features charming souks, but only Muslims may enter the tomb of Idris I, the founder of the Idrisid dynasty, who ruled from 788 to 791 AD and is credited with converting Morocco to Islam.
Next, we’ll make a short drive to the Roman ruins of Volubilis, known as Ouallili in Berber, meaning « laurel flower. » Here, you can explore the well-preserved remains of the ancient town, including the Triumphal Arch, baths, palaces, and stunning mosaics depicting Roman mythology.
As one of North Africa’s most significant Roman sites, Volubilis is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, making it a must-see attraction.
Then, we’ll head to the Imperial city of Meknes, founded as a military camp in the 11th century and often referred to as the « Versailles of Morocco. » This designation comes from its lavish design, created by Sultan Moulay Ismail in the 17th century to mimic the royal palaces of Paris and Arabia.
In its heyday, Meknes was fortified by 45 km of walls in three defensive circles, featuring twenty city gates and over fifty palaces.
You’ll see impressive crenulated battlements and gigantic city gates adorned with Islamic art, alongside Roman marble pillars looted from Volubilis.
Key sites include the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail, the royal palace of Dar El Makhzen, the Royal Stables, the beautiful Agdal reservoir, and the nearby granaries and subterranean prison. Meknes offers an old-fashioned charm and a more relaxed atmosphere than Fes, surrounded by stunning countryside, olive groves, and vineyards.
The local souks provide an excellent shopping experience, often at more affordable prices than in Fes.
After your day trip to Meknes, we will ensure you are returned to your riad in Fes.
As we say in Morocco, you are always welcome back to your second home.
